    The article describes peer review procedures used by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR). Based on the comparative analysis of the two approaches it provides a number of recommendations for the improvement of peer review in RFBR: provision of additional information to grant applicants, increased reimbursement of the reviewers, and institution of a professional position similar to National Science Foundation’s program officers.
