Scientific interest in the ethnic origins of location
theory and spatial analysis has increased over the past 20 years. The well-known
contributions of H. Thunen are considered by M. Blaug as the lynchpin of
German monopoly of the subject, but the early history of this area of economic
analysis was far more international than Bkaug's treatment leads us to
believe. It is well-known that the economic law of market areas was first
discovered by Launhardt (1882) in Europe and independently worked out by
Fetter (1924) in the United States. The article shows that the law of market
areas was introduced by K. Rau in 1841.
