The article deals with the role of the region in
the system of interregional economic links under the conditions of market
economy and the increase of the Russian Federation regions` independence.
The regions are grouped in accordance with industry specialization and
the level of unemployment. The classification of the Russian Federation
territories are made with the reference to the factors determining the
condition and type of functioning of production process in the regions.
The author identifies six types of the regions, briefly characterizing
them as territories with developed industry, territories with dominating
car making factories, territories with dominating mining industry, agricultural
territories, stagnating regions, crisis regions and turbulent regions.
